Dem Rep. Schiff pushes new bill he claims would protect US democracy

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), one of Capitol Hill’s most prominent critics of former President Donald Trump, has introduced a new bill that would purportedly protect the rule of law from tyrannical presidents.

In reality, however, the so-called Our Democracy Act appears to be his latest thinly veiled attack on Trump — and it could backfire by limiting the powers of the current or a future Democratic president.

“No president is above the law”

Echoes of Schiff’s years-long complaints about the previous president are included in the proposed legislation, which claims to “ensure no president is above the law.”

Such rhetoric was common among progressives during the Trump administration and many related grievances have been rehashed in Schiff’s latest effort.

For starters, it would “protect whistleblowers,” a possible allusion to the first impeachment effort against Trump.

The bill also ostensibly prevents the president from “politicizing” the Department of Justice, which was a common charge leveled at Trump amid an FBI probe into allegations that he colluded with Russia ahead of the 2016 election.

Schiff’s act would remove the president’s executive immunity to congressional subpoenas while limiting his power to pardon. Furthermore, it would suspend the statute of limitations for presidents accused of crimes.

“Ready for a future unethical president to exploit”

In a statement, the California Democrats made it clear that the legislation is more about the ex-president than anything else.

“While Donald Trump is no longer president, the fault lines he exposed in the foundation of our democracy remain — ready for a future unethical president to exploit,” Schiff claimed.

Of course, one possible problem for Democrats is that such measures could also be used to curtail the powers of a president in their party, i.e., President Joe Biden. Schiff’s apparent giveaway came in his reference to “future” presidents, however, apparently ruling out the current commander in chief.

The congressman continues to attack Trump over perceived misdeeds even as Biden’s agenda seeks to upend the rule of law and societal norms related to various issues without so much as a peep from Schiff and others on the left. Meanwhile, the current administration has effectively opened the southern border, diminishing the nation’s sovereignty amid an ongoing immigration crisis.

Given the behavior of the current president, it seems a tad rich for Schiff to engage in lectures about how best to protect our democracy.
