Sen. Joe Manchin endorses Republican congressman

Despite being a Democrat, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has often been attacked by others in his party for siding with Republicans. However, Manchin’s latest move is likely to surprise even his harshest critics.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchin went rogue last week by endorsing a Republican member of congress for reelection.

Manchin boasts of having opposed President Biden Build Back Better plan

As the paper reported, Manchin was featured in an advertisement released on Friday by West Virginia Rep. David McKinley.

McKinley currently represents his state’s 1st congressional district. However, the fact that West Virginia is losing a seat this year means McKinley will have to fight a primary battle against 2nd district Rep. Alex Mooney.

In the ad, Manchin not only touted his opposition to President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better legislation but also went after Mooney for suggesting that McKinley supported it.

“I’ve always said if I can’t go home to explain it, I can’t vote for it. And that’s why I opposed Build Back Better,” Manchin was quoted as saying of the bill.

“For Alex Mooney and his out-of-state supporters to suggest David McKinley supported Build Back Better is an outright lie,” Manchin stated.

“David McKinley has always opposed reckless spending, because it doesn’t make sense for West Virginia,” the moderate Democrat insisted, adding, “Alex Mooney has proven he’s all about Alex Mooney. West Virginians know David McKinley is all about us.”

Mooney says Manchin’s endorsement proof that McKinley is a “total RINO”

For his part, Mooney responded with a tweet alleging that Manchin’s endorsement of McKinley is proof his fellow Republican is a RINO (Republican In Name Only).

West Virginia’s MetroNews reported late last year that former President Donald Trump gave Mooney his endorsement, declaring, “Congressman Alex Mooney has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

The former president went on to assert that Mooney “will always protect our Second Amendment” and “will never stop” fighting on behalf of “energy and beautiful clean coal.”
