Sen. Paul and other GOP lawmakers push for Fauci’s prosecution

Last week, the Washington Examiner reported that Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) announced that he’s pushing to have the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director, Dr. Tony Fauci, prosecuted for lying to Congress.

Paul made the announcement during a segment with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, following a heated confrontation with Fauci at a Senate hearing over whether the NIH had funded gain-of-function research at a Wuhan, China lab.

According to transcripts compiled by Rev, Fauci explicitly denied that any funding for gain-of-function research had been spearheaded by his agency.

However, Paul pointed to “a paper in which a Chinese researcher at the Wuhan laboratory “credits the NIH [National Institutes of Health] and lists the actual number of the grant that she was given by the NIH.”

“Consequences” for Fauci

Paul isn’t alone in suggesting that Fauci needs to be held accountable for his role in what could have been ground zero for the COVID-19 virus, as Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) recently made similar threats.

The Washington Examiner reported that during a Wednesday appearance on Jenna Ellis’ Just the Truth podcast, Cawthorn pledged to pursue action against Fauci should his party come out on top in next year’s midterm elections.

“I’ll tell you, when we take the majority back in 2022, I’ll make sure consequences are doled out,” the Republican lawmaker said. “I’ll tell you, Dr. Anthony Fauci does not deserve either fame or fortune.”

Cawthorn added: “We want to prosecute this guy to the full ability of the law, and I’ll tell you, to lie to the American people just to get your name in the news, just to get your face on the cover of books, just to get fame and fortune.”

The North Carolina Republican doubled down in his criticism of Fauci, calling him “a punk who is trying to further his own career and make himself wealthy and famous.”

“An enemy to the world”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has also voiced animosity towards Fauci, with the Examiner previously reporting that she told former Trump administration adviser Steve Bannon that Fauci is an “enemy to the world.”

She asserted that “his experiment of gain a function, which took a virus that was spread between animals and turned it into, like, a Dr. Frankenstein-style virus.”

Taylor Greene added: “Dr. Fauci is sitting center state, the star of the show, running his own live human experiment, and it’s happening all over the world.”
