Senate candidate calls for McConnell to be replaced as GOP leader

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has faced some pushback from within his own party over his stance on certain issues in recent years.

Now, one Senate candidate is sharing her belief that it is time for McConnell to be replaced as his party’s leader in the upper chamber.

“McConnell said he would never do it again”

In a statement this month, Republican candidate Kelly Tshibaka accused McConnell of going too easy on the Biden administration and its efforts to push a progressive agenda through Congress.

She went on to insist that he has “repeatedly bailed out” the current White House even as President Joe Biden faces resistance from members of his own party.

“As an example, after rescuing Biden with the last debt ceiling increase, McConnell said he would never do it again,” Tshibaka wrote. “But he just did, and he had [Republican Alaska Sen.] Lisa Murkowski’s help in doing so.”

As the Washington Examiner explained, Tskibaka is currently running to replace Murkowski, whom she gave similarly poor marks for her performance in the Senate.

“The actions of McConnell and Murkowski on the debt ceiling show that it’s the political elites pitted against real Americans,” the candidate declared. “When I defeat Murkowski and become Alaska’s next U.S. Senator, I will not support Mitch McConnell as leader.”

“He is a disaster and should be replaced”

As for the type of leader that Tskibaka believes the GOP should have in the Senate, she specifically cited the need for “new, America First leadership.”

She reiterated her message recently in an interview with former Trump administration adviser Steve Bannon.

“The only way that Biden has been able to stay afloat is because he’s got these enabling officers in the U.S. Senate,” she claimed, calling Murkowski the president’s “chief enabling officer” and noting that “McConnell’s right up there.”

Tshibaka is not alone in calling for McConnell to be replaced, though it is currently unclear whether there is any real support for the effort among Senate Republicans. Among the most prominent advocates for replacing the current leader is former President Donald Trump.

In a statement earlier this month, Trump wrote: “How this guy can stay as Leader is beyond comprehension — this is coming not only from me, but from virtually everyone in the Republican Party. He is a disaster and should be replaced as ‘Leader’ ASAP!”
