Former White House official says Pelosi’s rule on masks is ‘sending the wrong message’

Fox News reported last month that demand for COVID-19 inoculations had begun to fall, forcing some jurisdictions to turn down new shipments of the vaccines. And according to one former White House official, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is only exacerbating the problem.

Retired Adm. Brett Giroir formerly served on the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force, and during a Wednesday appearance on Fox, he took issue with Pelosi’s insistence that even members of Congress who are fully vaccinated for the disease need to wear masks on the House floor.

The speaker’s rule stands in opposition to the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which say Americans who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 no longer need to cover their faces indoors or outdoors in most circumstances.

“If you’ve been fully vaccinated, it’s safe for you to be unmasked and very importantly it’s safe for other people even if they haven’t been vaccinated to be around you unmasked,” Giroir told Fox’s Martha MacCallum on Wednesday, according to the Daily Caller.

“Pure political theater” from Pelosi

Giroir went on to charge that Pelosi’s restrictions are more political theater than effective policy.

“You are protected and you’re safe around others,” he told Fox, as the Daily Caller reported. “The rule of Speaker Pelosi is pure political theater. It’s not based in science.”

Giroir insisted that by continuing to require masks, Pelosi is sowing confusion and reducing the impact of incentives driving Americans to get vaccinated for COVID-19.

“It’s actually sending the wrong message to Americans again,” the one-time White House COVID testing czar complained to MacCallum.

“We should be inspiring confidence in the vaccine, and what Americans are seeing is the Biden administration is talking the talk but the speaker of the house is not walking the walk,” he added, according to the Daily Caller. “I think this is dangerous to public health and needs to be fixed.”

“Return to normal”

Of course, Giroir is not alone in condemning the rule. The Daily Caller noted that a contingent of over 30 Republicans has written a letter to the speaker calling on her to lift the mask mandate.

“In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released on May 13, 2021 we urge you to immediately return to normal voting procedures and end mandatory mask requirements in the House of Representatives,” the letter reads in part.

“CDC guidance states fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting except where required by governmental or workplace mandate,” it adds. Looks like it’s time for Pelosi to start following the science.
