A portrait of Kamala Harris made from what Fox News described as “shattered glass” and weighing in at more than 300 pounds was unveiled on Thursday at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to commemorate her accomplishment of becoming the first woman vice president of the United States.
According to Fox News, the portrait was created by Swiss artist Simon Berger and modeled after a photo of Harris.
It was reportedly created in Switzerland and then shipped to the U.S. for display.
A “visual emblem of this moment”
Fox reports that the portrait was commissioned by the National Women’s History Museum and female executive networking organization Chief to symbolize Harris breaking the glass ceiling by serving as vice president.
“I think what makes it so moving to me is to see the tiny cracks, to see those fissures and everything they represent,” Chief co-founder Lindsay Kaplan told the Associated Press.
Artist Berger told the AP that he “hit the glass directly with the hammer, so that cracks and impacts occur.”
“Hard hits create abstraction and I ‘paint’ with targeted fine hits,” Berger said.
National Women’s History Museum president and CEO Holly Hotchner told the AP that the image “will just be a wonderful visual emblem of this moment in time, and hopefully people will reflect a little bit on all the barriers that have been broken by her election.”
“I will not be the last”
The 6-foot-by-6-foot, 350-pound portrait will be on display until Saturday, and will then go to New York before being displayed elsewhere, Fox News reported.

According to Fox, Harris said in a victory speech following November’s election, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.”
The former California senator got the job after then-candidate Joe Biden promised he’d choose a woman as his running mate and later, faced pressure to choose a Black woman for the role of VP, according to NPR. This time around, it looks like identity politics won out — and now, Biden, dubbed by many as a centrist, has one of the country’s most liberal lawmakers at his side. Let the infighting begin.
