Two Chicago police officers were rushed to the hospital on Sunday after being shot while on the job.
The Washington Examiner reports that one officer was shot in the hand and another in the hip and shoulder after being called to a scene just after 7 a.m. Sunday. The news comes amid a spike of violent crime in the Windy City.
“One officer was struck to the hip and shoulder, and the other officer was struck to the hand,” a news release from the Chicago Police Department read. “One officer returned fire, striking the offender in the leg. The offender was then placed into custody.”
The suspect was also taken to an area hospital, police said. The suspect was said to have been in “good condition.”
Officers returned fire
A spokesperson for Chicago police said both wounded officers have since been released from Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dozens of law enforcement personnel were said to have come out to greet their colleagues as they were discharged from the facility, just hours after being admitted, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It remains unclear what charges the suspect may face in connection to the incident.
“They run to danger”
In a statement responding to the shooting, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was grateful that neither the officers nor the alleged perpetrator lost their life as a result of Sunday’s violence.
“Thankfully, none of the injuries are life-threatening to either the officers or the offender. But it just underscores the danger that our men and women in the Police Department face every single day,” Lightfoot said, according to the Tribune.
“They run to danger to protect us. And we can’t ever forget that,” the mayor added.
According to ABC News, the officers who were shot Sunday were just two of some 48 victims of gun violence in Chicago over the weekend. At least five died, and at least six children were among the wounded, ABC said.
