Popular social media personality and former Dancing with the Stars contestant Hayes Grier has been arrested and is facing charges following a brutal attack.
According to Fox News, Grier was extradited from his California home to Charlotte, North Carolina over his alleged involvement in an incident that occurred there last week that left a man hospitalized with serious injuries.
A brutal assault
William Markolf reportedly sustained a “broken eyeball socket, brain damage, bruised ribs, bleeding from the back of the head, and loss of hearing” after he was allegedly assaulted by Grier and another individual who was not named by Fox.
Authorities said the 21-year-old also allegedly stole a telephone from Markolf valued at over $1,200, Fox reported.
He made bail after being booked into a Charlotte and promised to appear before a judge on Monday.
From social media to TV
According to reports, Grier’s claim to fame came on the now-defunct social media platform Vine. He maintains a hefty following elsewhere, however, and even appeared on Dancing in the Stars as a teenager in 2015.
Fox said he made it to Week 7 on the show competing alongside English dancer and choreographer Emma Slater.
Grier told the Charlotte Observer that he had little experience when it came to dancing, saying, “I’d hang back and watch everybody else unless I had a group of my friends that would all go out there and just be messing around.”
“It was never me actually going to the dance floor and trying to impress anybody,” he added. “I was never good enough to do that.”
A look back
Though he became well-known later in life, one of Grier’s older brothers once said that “he was phobically shy” for the first five years of his life and would often begin crying when he was made the center of attention.
“He would not pose for his T-ball picture. The preschool play, at the Christmas program, we had to go pull him off the stage because as soon as the parents started clapping, he lost it,” Grier’s brother recalled to the Charlotte Observer.
Grier went on to release a book in 2016 and acted on the Hulu show Freakish, according to AOL.
