Some experts say FBI raid could take election focus off of Biden

Given President Joe Biden’s low approval rating and failure to control inflation, many Republicans had hoped to make this year’s midterms a referendum on the president.

However, some observers say last week’s raid by FBI agents on former President Trump’s Florida home could divert attention from Biden’s record to allegations against his predecessor.

Strategist says Trump raid will leave “less oxygen” for GOP candidates

Among them is Republican political strategist and Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics fellow Douglas Heye.

He told the Washington Examiner, “Trump’s ability to seize headlines — good or bad — distract [from] Republican efforts to campaign on the things they should be campaigning on — inflation, rising crime, the border, and so on. There’s less oxygen for them.”

Heyes is not alone in offering that assessment: Ari Fleischer served as White House press secretary under former President George W. Bush, and he offered a similar view.

“This definitely makes Trump a bigger issue again, at least for now, but that’s because the DOJ chose to act this close to an election,” Fleisher was quoted by the Examiner as saying.

What’s more, Fleisher argued that any move by Trump to declare his intentions for 2024 would only compound the problem.

“Now, if Trump declares his candidacy prior to November, he will turn the election into a choice instead of a referendum, and that would be a mistake,” he insisted.

House Republican Conference chairwoman says voters will react to double standard

Yet not everyone agrees with the suggestion that GOP candidates will be negatively impacted by the FBI’s targeting of Trump.

The Examiner pointed to House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, who said at a press briefing on Friday that it will actually motivate conservatives to show up on election day, particularly when they see the disparity between how Trump is being treated and the hands-off approach federal authorities have taken to others.

“As the American people know, this is the same FBI leadership that protected Hillary Clinton, James Comey, and continues to protect Hunter Biden,” she recalled.

One GOP source agreed, telling the Examiner, “Republicans are fired up because Democrats are using their unchecked power of government to target conservatives. This transcends Trump and will backfire on Democrats.”
