Many experts believe that President Joe Biden could be facing another foreign policy disaster as Russia appears ready to invade neighboring Ukraine.
His administration appears to agree, with Fox News reporting that the White House is urging Americans to flee the Eastern European country.
“We’re always going to make decisions that are in the security interests of people who are serving as diplomats around the world,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday.
“Sounds pretty dangerous”
“Look, I will let others assess, but there are a hundred thousand troops – Russian troops – on the border of Ukraine, and no clarity that the leader of Russia doesn’t intend to invade,” Psaki continued, adding, “That sounds pretty dangerous to me.”
Earlier, Psaki had referenced a “Level 4” travel advisory issued in October by the U.S. State Department regarding Ukraine, and noted that any decisions regarding evacuation had been made in accordance with the agency’s “assessments.”
An advisory published last week reads, “U.S. citizens in Ukraine should be aware that Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine would severely impact the U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide consular services, including assistance to U.S. citizens in departing Ukraine.”
“On January 23, 2022, the Department of State authorized the voluntary departure of U.S. direct-hire employees and ordered the departure of eligible family members from Embassy Kyiv due to the continued threat of Russian military action,” it continues.
“U.S. citizens in Ukraine should consider departing now using commercial or other privately available transportation options.”
However, Fox News noted that the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs objected to the State Department’s decision to have the families of staff members leave, calling it an example of “excessive caution.”
“While we respect right of foreign nations to ensure safety & security of their diplomatic missions, we believe such a step to be a premature one & an instance of excessive caution,” spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko tweeted.
Critics have argued President Biden is himself largely to blame for the crisis in Ukraine, a view which is shared by former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
During an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Haley complained that members of Biden’s “administration has been very clear on how weak they are.”
