South Carolina county GOP censures Lindsey Graham over gun vote

The Horry County, South Carolina Republican Party has voted to censure Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) over his recent yes vote on a gun restrictions bill that put in place red flag laws and stricter background checks for young gun buyers, among other restrictions.

The county GOP for the area that includes Myrtle Beach voted unanimously at a meeting on August 1 to denounce Graham for his vote to support the Safer Communities Act, saying that Graham’s vote “enables a radical left cultural Marxist agenda and the weakening of the Republican brand and the tarnishing the ideals of freedom, rule of law, and the preservation of constitutional rights.”

A total of 15 Senate Republicans voted for the bill after mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas in recent months. It passed the House and was signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Graham said the bill “has a very good chance of saving lives, while at the same time, protecting the rights of responsible gun owners,” after he voted for it.

The ire of his base

Unless you’re adjudicated mentally ill or a convicted violent criminal, your Second Amendment rights won’t be affected,” he added.

The other senator from South Carolina, Tim Scott (R), voted against the bill.

Every so often, Republicans seem to try to throw a bone to Democrats on an issue, but it typically blows up in their faces when Democrats take advantage of their “generosity” to push for even more radical legislation or use it against them.

In this case, Graham has drawn the ire of his own base in an attempt to say that he and others “did something” about the gun violence the media constantly plays up.

Swaying to public sentiment

Graham has had a reputation for being a lawmaker that sometimes sways with the winds of public sentiment, or what he perceives as such.

His positions have varied between unwavering support for former President Donald Trump during two impeachments and being part of the so-called “Gang of 8” that supported some form of immigration reform that bordered on amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The latter position earned him the name Lindsey “Grahamnesty” from the late Rush Limbaugh some years ago.

This time, he seemed to be trying to deflect the blame for that was sure to come from Democrats each time a mass shooting occurs in the U.S.

He would have better spent his time working to educate the American public about how the media distorts mass shootings and what the numbers actually say about gun violence. But no, it’s easier just to vote with Democrats against the Constitution, I guess.
