The Washington Examiner reported this week that a Washington D.C. insider has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.
Twenty-seven-year-old Ruben Verastigui has admitted to possessing 152 videos and 50 images, all of which depicted children in sexually explicit settings.
Verastigui made the lurid confession to U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta in a Washington, D.C. federal courtroom on Friday as part of an agreement with authorities.
Despite accepting Verastigui’s plea, Mehta did not say whether he would apply the 12-to-15-year sentence recommended by prosecutors, announcing instead that he would decide at a later date.
Another feature of Verastigui’s federal plea deal precluded the possibility of him being brought up on additional state charges in Arizona.
A former aide to the Republican National Committee (RNC) who also worked for the Senate Republican Conference, Verastigui was caught in an online investigation that is said to have nabbed another 18 individuals.
According to Politico, Verastigui was found to be seeking out additional material and also spoke of his desire to murder children while abusing them.
Verastigui was not the only D.C. figure to be caught in the operation, as Politico reported in March that 25-year-old Adam Hageman was apprehended on similar charges last fall.
Another sickening case
The website states that Hageman, who was an advance representative at the Commerce Department in May of 2020, was the target of a raid in November. In a pretrial detention memo dated Nov. 17, prosecutors alleged that Hageman was “an active participant, often soliciting child pornography or commenting on it.”
What’s more, they said that he “invited at least one other person who he knew to be interested in child pornography and bestiality to the chat.”
Prosecutors added that Hageman’s phone “contained at least 33 videos that appear to contain sexually explicit depictions of children, including of prepubescent children.”
Hageman is reported to have made incriminating statements to officers as well as provide them with passwords to his electronic devices. Other allegations include that he planned to expose himself to children in public and to seek out parents who would be willing to “rent out” their children to himself and members of the group.
