The trial of Kyle Rittenhouse came to an end late last month when a jury found that the teenager was acting in self defense when he shot three men, two fatally, amid unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, late last summer.
While many watched the proceedings with nervous anticipation, Rittenhouse said in a recent interview he knew early on that prosecutors didn’t have a case.
According to the Daily Wire, the admission from Rittenhouse came in an interview that aired Tuesday wherein the now-18-year-old spoke with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and journalist Jack Posobiec.
“The state didn’t have a case”
“At what point in the trial were you like, OK, this is going in a direction that is somewhat favorable,” Kirk asked, according to the Daily Wire.
“There were two, actually, from when I knew the state didn’t have a case,” the teen replied. “It’s when they had their opening statements and when they put Dominick Black on the stand, which really helped me.”
Black, a close friend of Rittenhouse, initially purchased the semiautomatic rifle that Rittenhouse later used to defend himself amid riots in Kenosha in August 2020.
“That’s when I knew that they didn’t have a case,” Rittenhouse said, adding that Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger’s opening claim that the teen had “chased down” Joseph Rosenbaum, who died in the shooting, also tipped him off.
“I think they called Dominick to the stand hoping that he would lie,” Rittenhouse suggested. “But Dominick was under oath and he told the truth.”
“They’re coming after our guns”
Rittenhouse also acknowledged Tuesday that his efforts to “stay calm” and look like “a potted plant” during the trial hid a deep sense of inner turmoil.
“Believe it or not, I’m freaking out behind the scenes, because you don’t know what’s gonna happen,” the former defendant told Kirk during the interview, according to the Daily Wire.
When Kirk asked Rittenhouse why he believes there was such an effort by many on the left to demonize him, he responded, “They’re coming after our guns.”
“They want to come after Americans’ guns. People’s right to bear arms. That’s my opinion,” Rittenhouse added.
