One House Republican is calling on a Democratic leader in her state to resign.
According to reports, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is weighing in on allegations against Saratoga County Democratic Party Committee Chairman Todd Kerner.
“He should be ashamed”
In a statement on Friday, the congresswoman referenced claims of sexism and homophobia and cited ties to disgraced former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“There is no doubt that sexist, Cuomo crony Saratoga County Democrat Chair Todd Kerner must resign,” Stefanic wrote. “He should be ashamed and is a disgrace.”
Democrats in her district have been engaged in fierce infightings recently, leading to allegations against Kerner from two of her Democratic challengers.
Bridie Farrell put out a statement alleging that Kerner pressured her to drop out of the race shortly after she announced her candidacy in July. Kerner allegedly told her that “as a man,” he was “not comfortable” having a one-on-one meeting with her.
Matt Putorti claimed that Kerner and other state Democratic chairs have “insinuated” that he cannot win because he is gay. He has been a supporter of Farrell and said he believes her allegations.
“Historic and massive losses”
For his part, Kerner has attempted to dispute Farrell’s claims, in particular, insisting that she is “blatantly lying.”
Farrell responded by claiming that Kerner had been deleting negative comments on his Facebook page. His Twitter profile also appeared to be at least temporarily unavailable.
While Democrats continue to engage in intraparty squabbles, Stefanik and her campaign are attempting to capitalize on it ahead of next year’s midterm races. A campaign message called this situation “the biggest and earliest political implosion we have seen yet for North Country Democrat committees and candidates — a true achievement based on their historic and massive losses in every single election against Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.”
The statement went on to tie her Democratic challengers to the “failed agenda” behind sagging approval ratings for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“This is why Elise earns support from Republicans, Independents, and Democrats for her record of results for the North Country,” the campaign concluded. “Team Elise can’t wait for 2022.”
