Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee governor signs executive order to make schools safer

Tennessee’s Republican governor signed an executive order Monday to make schools safer for children in light of recent mass shootings.

Instead of punishing law-abiding gun owners, Governor Bill Lee’s (R) order calls for alternative measures such as a single entranceway at schools and more transparency for parents, Fox News reported.

Exec. order signed

Lee’s order calls for a review of police training in active shooter scenarios, an area of concern for many after the bungled law enforcement response to the recent shooting in Texas in which a gunman shot 19 children and two teachers dead.

The order recommends that schools have just one entranceway and multiple exits and calls for more random audits of school safety policies, as well as a resource guide to help parents report suspicious activity and monitor school security policy.

Lee said that the order “strengthens accountability and transparency around existing school safety planning and assures Tennessee parents that our efforts to protect students and teachers will continue.”

Democrats are predictably outraged that Lee is trying to stop school shootings without confiscating firearms from law-abiding Americans.

State senator Sen. Raumesh Akbari (D) dismissed Lee’s approach as “more of the same,” adding, “It’s not video games. It’s not our teachers or library books. It’s guns.”

Governor not targeting guns

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently pointed to the poor police response in Uvalde as evidence that the only “real solutions” involve gun control. Of course, incompetence by the authorities is hardly a good reason to disarm private citizens.

Lee said he is not targeting guns for a simple reason: criminals don’t follow the gun laws.

“We’re not looking at gun restriction laws in my administration right now. Criminals don’t follow laws, criminals break laws. Whether they are a gun law, a drug law, criminals break laws,” Lee said. “We can’t control what they do.”

While Republican governors like Lee are taking a hands-off approach, Democrats are going the opposite way and using recent shootings to target civil liberties.

New York’s liberal Governor Kathy Hochul (D) signed new regulations into law on Monday that, among other things, raised the age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21 and introduced a new government task force led by anti-Trump attorney general Letitia James for surveilling “hate” on social media.
