Breitbart News reports that, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, abortion clinics in Texas ceased operations.
After Roe was overturned on Friday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) put out a statement warning abortion providers that they may now be prosecuted for violating state anti-abortion laws that predated Roe.
“Some prosecutors may choose to immediately pursue criminal prosecutions based on violations of Texas abortion prohibitions predating Roe that were never repealed by the Texas Legislature,” Paxton wrote. “Although these statutes were unenforceable while Roe was on the books, they are still Texas law.”
“Under these pre-Roe statutes, abortion providers could be criminally liable for providing abortions starting today,” Paxton added.
Abortion clinics respond
It was following Paxton’s announcement that a number of abortion clinics in the state decided to cease operations.
Among them were Planned Parenthood Texas and Whole Woman’s Health. The latter suspended operations in four different locations.
Jeffrey Hons, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Texas, released a statement explaining his company’s decision.
“We must pause abortion services at our separate organizations while our legal teams continue to review today’s devastating ruling and how it impacts and triggers existing Texas laws, including total abortion bans,” Hons said.
Texas is one of the states that had in place a number of anti-abortion laws that would go into effect — or “trigger” — should Roe be overturned. As Paxton put it: “Texas law in a post-Roe world has already been written.” This is the reason why these abortion providers are ending their services in Texas – they don’t want to get criminally prosecuted under one of these laws.
Both Paxton and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), following the Supreme Court’s decision, both put out statements indicating that they intend to fight for the unborn.
“Now that the Supreme Court has finally overturned Roe, I will do everything in my power to protect the unborn and uphold the state laws duly enacted by the Texas Legislature,” Paxton said.
Abbott similarly stated: “Texas will always fight for the innocent unborn, and I will continue working with the Texas legislature and all Texans to save every child from the ravages of abortion and help our expectant mothers in need.”
