Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated, according to a statement from his office on Tuesday.
“Governor Greg Abbott today tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The Governor has been testing daily, and today was the first positive test result.
“Governor Abbott is in constant communication with his staff, agency heads, and government officials to ensure that state government continues to operate smoothly and efficiently,” the statement said.

“The Governor will isolate in the Governor’s Mansion and continue to test daily. Governor Abbott is receiving Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatment,” it added.
Another Breakthrough Case
Abbott was reportedly fully vaccinated prior to his breakthrough positive test result.
“Governor Abbott is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in good health, and currently experiencing no symptoms. Everyone that the Governor has been in close contact with today has been notified. Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott tested negative,” the statement noted.
The Daily Caller reported, “Texas is currently experiencing a surge of 53% in COVID-19 cases over the last 14 days, according to The New York Times’ COVID-19 tracker. The state’s vaccination rate of 45% is below the national average.”
A Growing Number
Abbott is one of many high-ranking officials to test positive for the virus. Former President Donald Trump tested positive in 2020, while South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham also recently tested positive though fully vaccinated.
Last month, nearly 60 Texas Democrats fled the state and flew to Washington, D.C., to avoid a vote on election reform. Despite all of the members being fully vaccinated, at least six tested positive for the virus.
Two other White House officials also tested positive before the policy was changed not to announce daily numbers.
The growing number of breakthrough cases has led some to focus on future “booster” shots, while others have argued for renewed lockdowns. Regardless, the positive test for Abbott comes at a time when Americans need their leaders healthy more than ever.
