Fox News reports that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has decided to have the illegal immigrants that have been dropped off in his state by the Biden administration bused to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Abbott announced his decision on Wednesday.
“I got a better idea”
In announcing his decision, Abbott said that cities in Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border have been busing illegal immigrants to San Antonio. So, he just decided to extend the bus ride.
“I said I got a better idea,” Abbott recalled. “As opposed to busing these people to San Antonio, let’s continue the ride all the way to Washington D.C.”
Texas officials have confirmed that the first location where the illegal immigrants will be dropped off is the U.S. Capitol.
The busing will be carried out by the Texas Division of Emergency Management, which is getting ready to “use as many buses as [needed].” Fox’s report suggests that the agency has access to up 900 buses.
“We are sending them to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border,” Abbott said.
The bigger picture
This is one of several steps that Abbott is taking in response to the influx of illegal crossings at the southern border, which have resulted from the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
The number of illegal crossings is already at or near record levels, and another surge is expected in the near future as the Biden administration looks to eliminate Title 42 expulsions. This is the Trump-era provision that has been used to expel illegal border crossers during the coronavirus pandemic.
Title 42 is scheduled to expire on May 23. And, it is being estimated that, with the cancellation, the number of illegal crossings into Texas will balloon from 8,000 per day to 18,000 per day. Abbott is looking to see what he can do to prevent this.
Reports indicate that Abbott has ordered the commencement of “mass migration” rehearsals by the Texas National Guard. Abbott has also ordered the increase of migrant turnback operations as well as a number of other measures to deter illegal crossings, including the use of blockades, razor wire, and lighting. And, this is all being funded by the Texas taxpayer.
“Securing the border does not come cheap,” Abbott said. “Securing the border would cost Texas nothing if the federal government was doing its job, but because Joe Biden is not securing the border, the state of Texas is having to step up and spend Texas taxpayer money doing the federal government’s job.”
