In a stark reversal from the policies of his predecessor, President Joe Biden has all but abdicated his duties when it comes to securing the U.S.–Mexico border. Now, state leaders are being forced to pick up the slack.
Breitbart reported Thursday that, in an act of defiance, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced his state would “step up and do more” to stem the recent surge of migrants into the U.S., including by constructing barriers at the southern border and opening additional jail facilities.
“The influx across the border is out of control, and the Biden administration has shown that is not going to step up and do its job,” Abbott told Breitbart in an exclusive interview. “And amidst reports of even more people coming in across the border, we know we have to step up and do more.”
More arrests, more barriers
Abbott went on to speak about rising crime rates at the border and the effects that those crimes having on residents of border communities.
“Texas already has done more than any other state to secure the border, but we know that more has to be done. And we’re stepping up to undertake an unprecedented response to the border crisis caused by the federal government,” the governor told Breitbart.
“If you come to Texas, you’re subject to being arrested,” he promised. “You’re not going to have a pathway to roam the country. You’re going to have a pathway directly into a jail cell.”
Speaking later in Del Rio, Gov. Abbott formally announced his plans to bolster border security at the state level. “President Biden’s open-border policies have led to a humanitarian crisis at our southern border as record levels of illegal immigrants, drugs, and contraband pour into Texas,” the Republican said, according to a transcript from his office.
“While securing the border is the federal government’s responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows,” Abbott explained. “The state is working collaboratively with communities impacted by the crisis to arrest and detain individuals coming into Texas illegally.”
Abbott also called the situation “an unprecedented crisis” that he said Texas is responding to “with the most robust and comprehensive border plan the nation has ever seen.”
No laughing matter
Later Thursday, Gov. Abbott confirmed to Fox News host Laura Ingraham that his state had allocated in its latest budget $1 billion for border security measures, including the construction of more barriers to curb the flow of migrants.
It’s necessary, Abbott said, as the Biden White House has made clear it’s “abandoned the border” and “any pretense of border security, any pretense of enforcing our immigration laws.”
“It’s wanton disregard for the border laws, for the immigration laws, for the border communities, for candidly, anybody in the United States of America,” Abbott said of the White House’s border policy, according to Fox. “They’ve laughed it off just the exact same way that the vice president laughed it off in her interview the other day. So it is a joke to the Biden administration.”
