It’s been weeks since President Joe Biden named Kamala Harris as his point-person on the crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border, and aside from a few phone calls and brief statements to the press, the vice president has apparently yet to act on her new duties.
Now, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is taking Harris to task over her inaction. According to Breitbart, the governor sent a letter last week urging the VP to face the consequences of what he described as the Biden administration’s “open border policies.”
“Now that President Biden has named you Border Czar in charge of the administration’s response, I want to express to you the threats and challenges caused by this administration’s open border policies,” Abbott wrote in his letter, dated March 30.
“Duty to investigate”
According to Abbott, Biden’s policies have “embolden[ed] and enrich[ed] cartels, smugglers, and human traffickers who continue to ramp up their criminal operations.”
The governor lamented that unaccompanied children — thousands of them, according to reports — are being “lured” by criminal organizations into “inhumane conditions” and exposed to “abuse and terror” on their ways to the U.S.–Mexico border.
“We have a duty to investigate these border crossings so we can protect the victims of human trafficking that have already crossed our borders, crack down on the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and ensure federal policies do not allow — or even incentivize — such behavior,” the governor wrote.
Abbott also urged Harris and others in the Biden administration “to interview every unaccompanied minor coming across the border to determine if any child has been harmed, groomed, or victimized by human traffickers in any way,” and called for transparency — something that has been far from common in Biden’s White House thus far.
“For weeks,” Abbott wrote, “the State of Texas has repeatedly sought answers from the Biden administration on several key questions that will help combat this crisis, yet these questions remain unanswered.”
President Biden‘s open border policies invite children to take a dangerous trek that exposes them to human trafficking.
Even Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas admitted that many children don’t make it through without harm.

Time to act
In Abbott’s eyes, the time for action is now — if not yesterday. Reports indicate that more than 172,000 migrants crossed into the U.S. just last month, including almost 20,000 children, a record-setting figure.
“In your role as Border Czar, you have a duty to these children and the American people to act immediately,” the Texas governor wrote in his letter to Harris.
“I implore you to act immediately to protect these children, secure the border, and end this crisis,” he declared.
