‘They’re complicit’: Former CBP official says Biden admin to blame for human trafficking at southern border

Former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan told Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on her Unmuted with Marsha podcast that the Biden administration’s open border policies have made President Joe Biden “complicit” in human trafficking conducted by cartels.

“Every town has turned into a border town, every state a border state because of this porous southern border,” Blackburn said after recently visiting the border, according to Breitbart.

While there, Blackburn was able to witness firsthand Biden’s failure to secure the border, and also met with the CBP, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas National Guard.

Reinstating “Remain in Mexico”

“What should the Biden administration do today to secure the border?” Blackburn asked Morgan.

“President [Donald] Trump and the great men and women who worked for him, they really developed a network of tools, authorities, and policies, and Remain in Mexico is one of those that absolutely, drastically secured our borders and ended catch and release and reduced the flow of immigration by 75%,” Morgan said, according to Breitbart.

On Friday, the Biden administration announced that it would reinstate the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy — also known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) — in November after losing a court challenge, even as it appeals the court’s decision.

“DHS is taking necessary steps to comply with the court order, which requires us to reimplement MPP in good faith,” a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson said Friday, according to CNBC.

“They’re complicit”

The number of undocumented migrants who could end up crossing the border in 2021 could reach 2 million, Morgan figured.

Remain in Mexico is a major deterrent for migrants since they can’t just disappear into the U.S. interior and conveniently not show up to an asylum hearing that is unlikely to go their way. Biden has called the policy inhumane because of the poor conditions migrants end up living in across the border as they await their asylum hearings.

But a bigger part of the picture is denying more money and power to the cartels, which are often paid to smuggle children and adults across the border, Morgan said.

“When you have open borders, ultimately who wins is the cartels,” he said, according to Breitbart. “I actually say right now the Biden administration, they’re complicit in completing the smuggling chain.”

Blackburn chimed in: “The exposure and the humanitarian crisis is horrific, and the Biden administration is responsible for what is going on.”
