On Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) contradicted both House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) and herself.
The House speaker insisted that articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump announced by Democrats earlier that day have nothing to do with the upcoming 2020 election, Breitbart reported — but that’s not how Schiff put it earlier that day.
“This isn’t about elections”
Pelosi was speaking at the Politico-hosted “Women Rule Summit” in Washington on Tuesday about a range of subjects when the “solemn” topic of impeachment inevitably came up for discussion. Early in her meandering remarks, the speaker claimed that Trump’s presidency jeopardizes future elections.
“If we did not hold him accountable, he would continue to undermine our election,” Pelosi said, discussing the “sense of urgency” surrounding Trump’s ouster. “Nothing less is at stake than the central point of our democracy, a free and fair election not disrupted by foreign powers.”
But just a moment later, Pelosi insisted that concern over 2020 played no part in her party’s decision to move forward with impeachment.
“We take an oath to protect and defend. If we did not do that, we would be, again, delinquent in our duties,” she said, according to The Hill. “So this isn’t about elections, it’s about the Constitution.”

“A free and fair election in 2020”
Aside from contradicting herself with her Tuesday remarks, Pelosi also undermined Schiff, who earlier that day had made clear his belief that allowing Trump to remain in office poses a dire threat to America’s electoral integrity.
Schiff used that concern to push back against critics who have argued that voters should be allowed to weigh in on Trump and that House Democrats should wait on court rulings related to subpoenas for certain documents and witness testimonies before formally impeaching the president.
“The argument ‘why don’t you just wait’ amounts to this: Why don’t you just let him cheat in one more election?” Schiff said, according to Breitbart. “Why not let him cheat just one more time? Why not let him have foreign help just one more time?”

“That is what that argument amounts to,” the Intel panel chairman added. “The president’s misconduct goes to the heart of whether we can conduct a free and fair election in 2020.”
Looks like Pelosi and Schiff may want to try and get on the same page before pressing onward with this charade.
