GOP Sen. Thune slams Biden for taking trip to Scotland while ignoring southern border

President Joe Biden continues to face criticism from the right over his apparent reticence to visit the southern border amid an ongoing immigration crisis.

Ahead of an upcoming trip to Scotland, U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said he found it “remarkable” that the president could find time to make the international trip but not to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border or address other issues impacting the lives of American citizens.

“The president wants a deal on some so-called Green New Deal before he goes to Glasgow, Scotland, and I think the only thing the American people are worried about is not what’s happening in Glasgow but what’s happening to gas prices,” Thune said, according to CNS News.

“A historic number of people”

The South Dakota Republican went on to note that “energy prices are starting to go through the roof” before indirectly referencing remarks Biden made during a CNN town hall event last week.

When asked about his reluctance to visit the border in person, the president declared: “I guess I should go down, but the whole point of it is I haven’t had a whole hell of a lot of time to get down.”

For Thune and other conservative critics, that excuse clearly rang hollow.

“It is I think remarkable that the president finds time to go to Glasgow when he can’t find time to go to the border,” the senator said. “So we have a historic number of people coming across the border.”

“Understand the sense of urgency”

Thune went on to point out that an estimated 2 million undocumented immigrants are expected to illegally enter the United States throughout this year even as arrests and deportations remain low.

“So I guess what I would say to the administration is it’s not enough to go to Glasgow, Scotland,” he concluded. “I think it’s important to go to the border, and having a roundtable 1,000 miles away isn’t going to cut it.”

Thune turned his attention directly to Biden with a plea for him to “get down there, see the conditions that our Border Patrol agents are dealing with and understand the sense of urgency that surrounds what’s happening at our border, the humanitarian and national security crisis it has become” due to the current administration’s immigration policies.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the mainstream media has effectively given Biden a pass as the border crisis continues to spiral out of control, though the same cannot be said for the American people as a whole.

As the president’s approval rating continues to sink, his immigration policy is one of many contributing factors identified by pollsters.
