While they insist that the Mar-A-Lago raid was not at all political, Democrats are all but bragging that it will lead to former President Trump getting charged.
Giving voice to the obvious wishes of the party’s base, Senator Patrick Leahy (Vt.) said that Trump “could end up being indicted,” Breitbart reported.
Trump indictment speculation
The raid supposedly has to do with Trump possessing classified documents, but the details have remained a mystery, and the DOJ has fought to keep the underlying affidavit under seal.
Still, Leahy confidently predicted that Trump will be charged, telling MSNBC that the former president thinks he is “above the law.”
“He felt that he was above the law. I guess he still feels that, but he could end up being indicted for this. These papers presidents are very careful to make sure they’re given to somebody who archives them, blocks them up, puts them in the national archives,” Leahy said.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time Democrats made flimsy accusations of criminal wrongdoing against Trump. Russian collusion, anyone?
It also doesn’t help the Democrats’ case that Biden apparently lied when he said he had no advance knowledge of the raid.
Walls closing in?
A new bombshell report in Just the News said that the Biden administration months ago took the unusual, legally questionable step of waiving Trump’s executive privilege for him, which allowed a grand jury to move ahead with a subpoena for records against the former president.
Still, Biden claimed as recently as Wednesday that he had “zero” foreknowledge of the raid. Biden has also continued to insist, despite evidence to the contrary, that he knew nothing about his son’s international business deals.
Trump and his lawyers have blasted the raid as partisan attack designed to kneecap any chance of Trump running for re-election, and that is certainly what it’s starting to look like.
Supposing charges don’t stick, though, the raid could wind up helping Trump in the long run. There are already signs of this happening as Republican voters rally behind the former president.
It remains to be seen what comes next, but it’s pretty clear which outcome Democrats are rooting for.
