According to a new report, a top military leader spent the final days of former President Donald Trump’s term in office plotting against him.
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley reportedly promised to preemptively warn China if the U.S. approved a military attack and worked with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to strip Trump’s control of the armed forces, according to Breitbart News.
“It’s not going to be a surprise”
The shocking revelations are detailed in a new book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa. In Peril, the authors assert that Milley’s actions were based on his hunch that Trump could start a nuclear war in the waning days of his presidency.
The general is said to have taken matters into his own hands by unilaterally suspending civilian control of the military, thus usurping the nation’s constitutional system of government.
Milley began plotting four days before November’s election, according to the book, telling China’s top general in a phone call that he would provide information about any possible U.S. attack on Beijing.
“General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years,” Milley reportedly said, as Breitbart noted. “If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”
Following the Capitol Hill riot on Jan. 6, Milley’s alleged behind-the-scenes actions became more brazen as he worked with Pelosi to limit Trump’s powers.
“I agree with you on everything”
In a phone call just two days later, Pelosi reportedly claimed that Trump was going “crazy” and asked Milley to take the nuclear codes from the commander-in-chief.
“I agree with you on everything,” Milley is quoted as saying in response, assuring the House speaker that there were “a lot of checks in the system” that could prevent Trump from exercising his constitutional powers.
The same day, Milley reportedly held a secret meeting with other top military officers and asked them for an oath not to take any military action without his approval. He is also said to have ordered the nation’s intelligence community to be prepared to act against the president “without the knowledge of the American people.”
It appears that Milley was prepared to use force to stand in Trump’s way and even compared the then-president to Adolf Hitler according to a previous book.
Of course, the United States is not a banana republic and military leaders cannot simply suspend the rule of law because they believe the president might do something. Nevertheless, those politicians and pundits who spent four years demonizing the last president largely view Milley as a hero, concluding that nothing is off-limits if it means undermining Trump.
