Former President Donald Trump has weighed in on next year’s midterm elections yet again, this time issuing a powerful endorsement in one Texas race.
Trump delivered a potentially devastating blow to the Bush political dynasty by backing incumbent Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against GOP rival George P. Bush.
“Will never let you down”
Bush, who is the son of Trump’s 2016 rival, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, has been far more supportive of the former president than his father and many others in his family.
Nevertheless, Trump released a statement touting Paxton as an enemy of “Radical Left Democrats” and even some “foolish” Republicans. He did not mention George P. Bush by name.
Several years ago, Trump effectively cast Jeb Bush as “low energy,” going on to secure the Republican presidential nomination and ultimately the White House.
As a private citizen, the former president still dominates his party and the Bush family has struggled to remain relevant. His endorsement in this race is likely to be interpreted as another humiliating blow to the family and a major setback for George P. Bush, the last one in his family still holding public office.
“Ken has my Complete and Total Endorsement for another term as Attorney General of Texas,” Trump wrote in his endorsement announcement. “He is a true Texan who will keep Texas safe — and will never let you down!”
“To advance America First policies”
The younger Bush has frequently broken with his more well-known father and his uncle, former President George W. Bush, supporting Trump as far back as 2016.
At one point, he called Trump “the only thing standing between America and socialism,” and more recently backed the ouster of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from party leadership after she voted to impeach the then-president.
Trump has offered some praise of his own for “the only Bush who got it right,” at times calling George P. “my Bush.”
In the end, however, it appears that the former president still sees Paxton as the right candidate for the job. Although the current attorney general backed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the 2016 presidential race, he has proven to be a loyal ally to Trump in the years since.
As Trump explained in his endorsement: “It is going to take a PATRIOT like Ken Paxton to advance America First policies in order to Make America Great Again.”
