Trump calls on Barr to open probe into Hunter Biden emails: ‘The attorney general has to act’

Attorney General Bill Barr is facing calls from the president to appoint a special counsel to look into allegations of corruption and wrongdoing by Democrat presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

According to Fox News, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Barr needs to “act fast” to “appoint somebody” who can investigate claims made in a recent report by the New York Post, which alleged that “Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company.”

The Post cited emails taken from the hard drive of a laptop that it said belonged to Hunter Biden.

“The laptop from hell”

Speaking by phone Tuesday morning with the hosts of Fox & Friends, Trump made mention of both the laptop and the allegations leveled by the Post.

“This is the laptop from hell,” Trump said of the device, which the Post said was left last year at a Delaware computer repair store.

Fox News has reportedly obtained a copy of an invoice for the laptop that it says appears to show Hunter Biden’s signature. According to Fox, the FBI is currently in possession of the device — but that’s not the only thing the Bidens have to worry about.

“Even if he didn’t get all of this money, you can’t go to China and have the son walk out with $1.5 billion,” Trump told Fox & Friends on Tuesday, in an apparent reference to a 2013 trip to China that Hunter Biden took aboard Air Force Two with his father, according to a separate report from Fox News. Fox reported in 2019 that following the trip, a private equity firm that Hunter Biden co-founded received a $1.5 billion influx of cash from a Chinese businessman.

“And you didn’t have a job before your father was vice president… You can’t go and go with your father and every stop you make, you pick up $1 billion,” Trump said of the former vice president’s son. “The vice president got a kickback,” he added, according to Fox, “and everybody knows it, and they’ve known it a long time.”

“The attorney general has to act”

According to Fox, these allegations have at least 11 House Republicans, including Arizona’s Andy Biggs and Florida’s Ted Yoho, urging Barr to appoint a special counsel to investigate.

“These alleged revelations raise serious questions about former Vice President Joe Biden’s reported participation with his son’s business, dealings, specifically whether the former vice president (1) received foreign monies during his tenure in the Obama administration and (2) if former Vice President Biden allowed his son to peddle access to his father with foreign business entities,” the Republicans wrote in a letter to Barr Monday, as Fox reported.

The next day, Trump chimed in with his support for the GOP’s effort. “We’ve got to get the attorney general to act,” the president told Fox & Friends. “He’s gotta act, and he’s gotta act fast, and he’s gotta appoint somebody.”

Trump went on: “This is major corruption, and we have to know about this before the election. The attorney general has to act.”
