President Donald Trump has long accused Joe Biden of corruption, but the president is using sharper language than ever to attack his rival after new evidence surfaced of shadowy dealings by the former vice president and his son, Hunter Biden.
At a campaign rally in Nevada on Sunday, Trump called the Biden family a “criminal enterprise” as the crowd chanted, “Lock him up,” Fox News reported.
Trump slams Biden’s “criminal enterprise”
“Joe Biden is and always has been a corrupt politician,” Trump said. “He always has been. And as far as I’m concerned, the Biden family is a criminal enterprise. It really is.”
Trump was riffing on a New York Post article that supplied e-mail evidence that Joe Biden met with a top executive from Burisma Holdings, validating Trump’s longtime claim that Joe intervened to bolster and protect his son’s business in Ukraine.
The president told his supporters that Biden makes “Crooked Hillary” look like an “amateur,” as rallygoers broke into chants of “lock him up,” in a play on the “lock her up” mantra that has long been a MAGA staple.
With days to go before Election Day, Trump has called on the Justice Department to open a probe into the scandal.
“This is major corruption, and we have to know about this before the election. The attorney general has to act,” Trump said Tuesday.
Trump takes aim at “criminal” media too
Leaning into his characterization of Biden as a Washington insider who put his family’s interests before that of the nation, Trump described his rival Sunday as belonging to a “failed and corrupt political class that enriched itself while draining the economic life and soul from our country.”
The release of the new e-mails has provided Trump with more evidence to attack Biden in those terms, in an unexpected turn that some have called an “October surprise.”
Nevertheless, that corrupt ruling class also includes a media that has worked to amplify bogus claims that the e-mails are part of a “Russian disinformation” campaign, while Big Tech companies tried to suppress the story.
On Monday, Trump took aim at the media’s silence, calling one reporter a “criminal” accomplice to the Biden family.
“He’s been a criminal for a long time. And you’re a criminal – and the media – for not reporting it,” he said.
