President Joe Biden has made it a point since taking office to deliberately undo virtually every immigration enforcement and border security policy set under former President Donald Trump, and that has sparked a massive surge of migrants, many of them unaccompanied minors, seeking entry into the country at the southern border.
Trump issued a fiery statement Friday that directly blamed Biden for the “spiraling tsunami” at the border and chastised his successor for reversing his successful policies that had made the border more secure, Fox News reported.
The Biden White House responded by immediately dismissing Trump’s criticism and accusing the former president of having “not only inhumane but ineffective” policies with regard to immigration enforcement and border security.
Trump: Biden has wrecked the border
In his statement, Trump said, “Our border is now totally out of control thanks to the disastrous leadership of Joe Biden. Our great Border Patrol and ICE agents have been disrespected, demeaned, and mocked by the Biden Administration.”
Trump said the “mass incursion” at the border was growing “worse by the minute” and noted that many of the new arrivals being allowed in have criminal records or were suspected of being infected with COVID-19.
“Interior enforcement has been shut down — criminals that were once promptly removed by our Administration are now being released back onto the street to commit heinous and violent crimes,” Trump continued. “ICE officers are desperate to remove these convicted criminals, but Biden won’t let them.”
Trump: Biden responsible for “spiraling tsunami” at border
“The spiraling tsunami at the border is overwhelming local communities, depleting budgets, crowding hospitals, and taking jobs from legal American workers,” Trump said.
“When I left office, we had achieved the most secure border in our country’s history,” he continued. “Under Biden, it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before. He has violated his oath of office to uphold our Constitution and enforce our laws.”
The former president went on to lament a number of specific policies that, in his view, were hugely successful in helping to reduce illegal immigration while securing the southern border, but noted that they were quickly dismantled and reversed by Biden in the course of a month’s time.
“The Biden Administration must act immediately to end the border nightmare that they have unleashed onto our Nation. Keep illegal immigration, crime, and the China Virus out of our country!” Trump concluded.
Psaki: We don’t take advice from Trump
During the press briefing Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki danced around questions about whether Biden’s rhetoric and reversal of Trump’s policies had led to the migrant surge at the border, and then bluntly dismissed Trump’s statements when they were raised by a reporter.
“We don’t take our advice or counsel from former President Trump on immigration policy, which was not only inhumane but ineffective over the last four years,” Psaki said. “We’re going to chart our own path forward, and that includes treating children with humanity and respect, and ensuring they’re safe when they cross our borders.”
