Former President Donald Trump said in an interview with Breitbart last week that he’s spoken by phone with world leaders who are less than impressed with the way Joe Biden handled the recent withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
Speaking with Breitbart, Trump said “there’s something wrong” with President Biden and suggested the current commander-in-chief won’t run for office again in 2024.
“I don’t think you’ll face Biden,” Trump told Breitbart. “Biden is not an old man, by the way, but there’s something wrong. But he is not an old man — he’s going to be 79; that is not old. I know people that are much older than that, and they’re as sharp as they were 40 years ago. Biden is not an old person.”
“Something is wrong”
While Trump said it isn’t Biden’s age that’s to blame, he still conceded that there may be something going on with Biden, whose botched handling of the Afghanistan pullout led to a collapse in his approval ratings.
“I know so many people even in their 90s, like Bernie Marcus of Home Depot and so many others; they’re in their 90s and sharp as can be. But something is wrong,” Trump said of Biden, according to Breitbart.
“Something is going wrong there,” the former president added. “I don’t like to predict that far forward. It’s such a long time, and I don’t know — things are happening left and right.”
“They can’t believe it”
Trump also confirmed in the interview that he’s gotten calls from foreign leaders who, in Breitbart’s words, “expressed dismay with Biden’s performance.” According to a report from the New York Post, politicians in the U.K. even moved to formally condemn the U.S. president for his actions.
“Yeah, I have,” Trump said when pressed on whether he’s spoken with world leaders. “They can’t believe it,” he said without naming names.
“They can’t believe it,” Trump reiterated, according to Breitbart. “Just like you can’t believe it. Just like any sane rational person can’t believe it.”
Trump had a plan
The former president said his administration had a plan, one that would have ensured that all U.S. citizens made it out of Afghanistan, a country now under Taliban control.
“We were going to get out — but we were going to get out with dignity and with honor,” Trump told Breitbart. “We were going to get out with all of the people. And we were going to take all of the equipment.”
Reports published as recently as Thursday indicated that evacuation efforts remained ongoing in Kabul.
