Speculation about the state of Democrat nominee Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities has died down considerably in the wake of President Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis and recovery.
However, after a number of gaffes on Biden’s part this week, President Trump renewed attacks on Biden’s mental health, claiming that Biden has “dementia,” which is “unacceptable for the USA.”
Back at it again
After some days of avoiding criticism for his typical gaffes and memory lapses, Biden once again came under the spotlight for a pair of glaring incidents on the campaign trail this week.
Biden appeared to forget the name of former 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday, referring to him as the “Senator who was a Mormon.”
“You may remember, I got in trouble when we were running against the senator who was a Mormon, the governor, OK?” Biden said. “And I took him on. No one’s faith should be questioned.”
The same day, Biden said that he was “running as a proud Democrat for the Senate,” later correcting the slip and saying that he’s “running as a proud Democrat for president.”
President Trump, never one to let Biden get away with anything, pounced on the gaffes and brought back claims that Biden is experiencing cognitive decline.
“Sleepy Joe Biden had a particularly bad day today,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “He couldn’t remember the name of Mitt Romney, said again he was running for the U.S. Senate, and forgot what State he was in. If I did any of this, it would be disqualifying. With him, he’s just Sleepy Joe!”
“Joe also said yesterday he’s running for the U.S. Senate (again) and totally forgot where he was (wrong State!),” Trump continued. “Joe has never been a nice or kind guy, so it’s easier to find this obvious & rapidly getting worse ‘dementia’ unacceptable for USA!”
President Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis offered Democrats the perfect opportunity to attack President Trump over his health after months of the GOP’s relentless questioning of Biden’s physical and mental health.
Democrats even became somewhat conspiratorial, speculating that the cocktail of drugs administered to Trump during his battle with COVID-19 could be affecting his performance as president.
Trump appears to be fully recovered from the virus, however, cutting off Democrats’ ammunition against him. On the other hand, Biden continues his record of jaw-dropping gaffes giving ample evidence for those questioning his ability to carry the office.
