According to a new poll from Harvard CAPS-Harris, former President Donald Trump is currently the overwhelming favorite to win the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
Just how overwhelming of a favorite is Trump?
Let’s put it this way: he holds a 40 percentage point lead over his closest competitor.
The pollster found that, if the 2024 Republican presidential primary were to be held today, Trump would be expected to get about 56% of the vote. In contrast, Trump’s next closest competitor – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) – would only get 16% of it.
That’s right: Trump scored a majority victory in a poll in which a smaller plurality usually wins the day. That’s how favored Trump is among Republican voters.
The one thing that we still do not know for sure is whether Trump actually will run again for the U.S. presidency in 2024. He has undoubtedly teased the idea. But, he has yet to make an official announcement.
A new report from the New York Times, however, suggests that Trump is on the verge of making it official. We’ll have to see if the reporting is accurate. Previously, it was expected that Trump wouldn’t make the announcement until after this year’s midterm elections.
Another question is who Trump’s running mate would be should he choose to run? Many Republicans are mouth-watering at a potential Trump-DeSantis ticket. And, Trump, recently, indicated that this is not outside the realm of possibility.
It would certainly be one of the most powerful presidential tickets in years.
