CNN analyst: Trump will dump Pence for Haley after Democrats choose nominee

President Trump has consistently spoken well of Vice President Mike Pence, recently entrusting him to lead the coronavirus task force.

Yet despite his high-profile role, one pundit believes that Pence will be removed from Trump’s 2020 ticket as soon as Democrats choose their nominee.

Pence swap

The Hill reported that on Monday, former Democratic strategist and veteran CNN contributor Paul Begala claimed that Trump is planning to “dump” Pence in favor of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.

“This is not a prediction. It’s a certainty,” Begala promised, adding that it was guaranteed Pence would be thrown “under the bus” this summer.

According to Begala, Trump is losing “college-educated white voters,” and particularly “college-educated white women in the suburbs.” Begala went on to speculate that Pence has outlived his usefulness and that Haley will help him secure the demographic that is currently “running from Trump.”

“On Thursday, July 16 — that’s the date the Democrat gives his or her acceptance address — on that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He’s going to dump Mike Pence and put Nikki Haley on the ticket to try to get those suburban moms,” Begala concluded.

Haley: Trump and Pence “a great ticket”

Haley, who served as UN ambassador from January 2017 until October of 2018, has been noted for having a good relationship with the president. However, the former governor has been adamant that she has no interest in being vice president.

“The vice president and the president are a great ticket together,” Haley said during a “Fox & Friends” appearance late last year.

“They’re solid. Solid enough that they’re going to win together. There is no truth whatsoever that I would ever in any way look to get that position,” another Hill article reported. Haley added, “I think that he’s the right partner for the president.”

For his part, Trump has also tamped down rumors that he will be replacing Pence with Haley, with Politico quoting him as saying in November that “Mike Pence is a great vice president.”

Still, he promised that Haley would “absolutely” play a role in his re-election campaign and went on to praise her efforts. “She is a friend of mine, she endorsed me with the most beautiful endorsement you’ve ever heard. She did a great job at the U.N,” he said.

This isn’t the first time that Begala has made a major prediction regarding Trump, stating in December that, “This is not the last impeachment we will cover of Donald J. Trump.”
