‘They love him in Georgia’: Trump suggests Herschel Walker could run for Senate in Georgia

Millions of former President Donald Trump’s supporters have been eagerly anticipating a potential announcement concerning his plans for a 2024 presidential run. While Trump did make a recent announcement, it wasn’t related to his political future, though it’s just as exciting for many.

According to the Washington Examiner, the former president announced that former Heisman winner Herschel Walker told him over dinner that he will run for office in a bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA).

As the Examiner noted in March, Walker edged out Warnock in a 2022 Senate poll, confirming the belief of many that the former athlete could be the Republicans’ best chance at taking the Georgia seat.

“Georgia on my mind”

Trump made the remarks during an interview with The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, saying that Walker will, in fact, mount a challenge against Warnock in the 2022 midterm elections.

“They love him in Georgia,” the former president said, adding: “I’ll tell you. He was the greatest running back in the history of the state.” Trump went on to praise Walker for being “a patriot,” as well as “a great guy,” and a “very loyal person.”

Although Walker has yet to make an official statement regarding his future political ambitions, he published a tweet two weeks ago that read, “Georgia on my mind,” which many interpreted as a strong hint that he’ll soon make an official campaign announcement.

Accompanying the message was a short video clip of Walker showing off a car equipped with Georgia license plates, a sign that he may have re-established residency in the state. “We can run with the big dogs,” the former college football legend quipped.

Walker vows “to fight for the people of Georgia”

The Examiner noted that Walker discussed the possibility of pursuing a Senate run in an interview this spring with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.

“I’m very honored that they would consider me running for the Senate, and my family, we’re still going through this process of praying and really considering it,” Walker told Bartiromo at the time.

“But I will tell you this: Herschel Walker believes in God, I believe in this country, I believe in the people, and I’m going to fight for the people of Georgia if I run, so just stay tuned … It’s going to be exciting.”

Walker has long been involved with conservative politics and was featured at last year’s Republican National Convention, where he heaped praise on then-President Trump.

“He shows how much he cares about social justice and the Black community through his actions,” Walker said of Trump. “And his actions speak louder than any stickers or slogans on a jersey.”
