Trump hints at scope of findings in Durham probe: ‘It’s breathtaking’

For over a year, U.S. Attorney John Durham has been investigating wrongdoing allegedly committed during the Trump–Russia collusion probe.

Although Durham and Attorney General Bill Barr have remained tight-lipped about what has been uncovered thus far, President Donald Trump recently dropped a hint about the true scope of the findings.

Trump talks Durham probe

According to the Washington Examiner, the president’s remarks came during an interview on Tuesday, when he spoke with Fox Business personality Lou Dobbs about the so-called “Obamagate” scandal.

“We caught them spying,” Trump told Dobbs. “Now it’s up to our attorney general. As you know, I’ve wanted them to do it. I didn’t want to get overly involved,” he said with regard to the potential release of the investigation’s results.

“Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn’t,” Trump continued. “But I do hear it’s breathtaking what they found. That’s all I can say, breathtaking.

“It’s beyond what anyone ever thought was possible, that’s how bad it is. How bad it is and how corrupt it is. But, I’m going to let them do that, I’m not going to do that,” the president said, as the Examiner reported. Trump went on: “It’s a horrible thing that took place, and it should never be allowed to happen to another president.”

Criminal investigation continues

In May of 2019, USA Today reported that Barr formally tapped Durham to open an inquiry “into the origins of the Russia inquiry and the FBI’s surveillance activities.”

“Spying on a campaign is a big deal,” the paper quoted Barr as saying at the time. “I think spying did occur. The question is whether it was adequately predicated.”

In October, Fox News revealed that Durham’s probe had morphed into a criminal investigation after Barr traveled to meet with Italian intelligence officials.

However, the outlet also reported that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) expressed alarm over that particular development.

“These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trump’s political revenge,” the Democrats said in a statement that formed the basis of a line of attack against Barr that continues to this day.

Only time will tell just how “breathtaking” Durham’s findings turn out to be and whether any of the Deep State actors who plotted to take down a duly elected president will ever be held to account.
