In the months since he left the White House, former President Donald Trump has remained engaged in GOP politics, particularly through his endorsement of several political candidates.
Trump surprised supporters over the weekend with an unscheduled appearance at a fundraiser being held for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who received his endorsement earlier this year in her bid to become the next governor of Arkansas.
“A surprise appearance”
In a tweet on Sunday confirming the former president’s “surprise appearance,” the former White House press secretary did not confirm where or when the event was held.

Term limits prevent current Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, from seeking another term.
Sanders, who became Trump’s top spokesperson in 2017 and stepped down from the role in 2019, has reportedly remained close with the 45th president.
As for her efforts to replace Hutchinson, she has proven popular among the GOP despite the fact that she has never held prior public office.
“A Christian, a conservative, and a proud Arkansan”
In apparent acknowledgment of her popularity, Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin, also a Republican, has since dropped out of the race. He announced that he would be campaigning to become attorney general instead.
No other candidates are presenting a serious threat to her candidacy. If she wins a GOP primary race in the solidly Republican state, she is all but guaranteed a win in the general election.
Mike Huckabee, her father, served as the state’s governor between 1996 and 2007.
In January, shortly after Sanders announced her candidacy, Trump offered his endorsement, declaring: “Sarah is strong on Borders, tough on Crime, and fully supports the Second Amendment and our great law enforcement officers. She loves our Military and Veterans – and her home state of Arkansas. Sarah will be a GREAT Governor, and she has my Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Earlier this week, former Vice President Mike Pence also endorsed Sanders, calling her “a Christian, a conservative, and a proud Arkansan who will fight for the people of Arkansas, stand with law enforcement, promote lower taxes, champion school choice, and more.”
