Trump announces normalization of relations between Israel and Morocco

While it’s looking more likely that President Donald Trump will be leaving office next month, he’s still hard at work on his “America First” presidential agenda, which include allying strongly with Israel and encouraging other countries to do the same.

On Thursday, Trump announced that Morocco would become the fourth country in the Middle East and surrounding areas to normalize relations with Israel, as a direct result of diplomacy by his administration.

The U.S. previously brokered agreements by Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan to normalize relations with Israel, and Saudi Arabia is widely expected to follow suit at some point as well.

Trump’s peace efforts had a strong part in the agreements, leading to four nominations for Nobel Peace Prizes earlier in the year.

U.S. recognizes Morocco sovereignty over Western Sahara

As part of a series of tweets about the development, Trump also announced that the U.S. would recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara region:

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!” another Trump tweet read.

The two countries have not had diplomatic relations since 2000.

Trump aide Jared Kushner was involved in brokering the deal. “It further enhances Israel’s security, while creating opportunities for Morocco and Israel to deepen their economic ties and improve the lives of their people,” Kushner said.

Morocco has had informal relations with Israel for some time now, and a small Jewish community of several thousand people lives there, according to the Associated Press.

Biden expected to push for Palestinian statehood

If Biden does indeed take over as president on January 20, he is not expected to continue Trump’s strong pro-Israel policies.

The Democrat Party has a strong streak of support for a Palestinian state, and it’s far left wing including “squad” members Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) have repeatedly attacked Israel for oppressing the Palestinian people.
