The former Republican governor of Michigan is endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, Fox News reports, in what is just the latest gesture of protest against President Donald Trump from the GOP’s old guard.
President Trump, for his part, blasted “failed RINO” Rick Snyder in the wake of his endorsement of Biden on Thursday.
Former GOP governor stumps for Biden
According to Fox News, Snyder told the network’s Neil Cavuto that he is a “proud Republican” who is voting for Biden, citing Trump’s coronavirus response.
“I’ve already voted,” Snyder said. “I’m a proud Republican. This was a big decision but you come back to the basics, I’m an American first.
“We shouldn’t let partisanship get in the way of good decision-making for our country,” Snyder added. “Joe Biden is a better decision than Donald Trump for the next four years.”
Snyder left office in 2019, when Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took over. The Republican has sat closer to Whitmer on coronavirus policy than most others in his party, saying Thursday that he agrees with a national mask mandate and that America, under Trump, is doing a worse job fighting the pandemic than Canada.
The former governor also called Trump a “superspreader” and complained about negative comments the president reportedly made about one of his top coronavirus advisers, Dr. Anthony Fauci. “How can you sit there and say we are rounding the corner on COVID?” Snyder said, according to Fox.
Trump fires back
Snyder joins a group of current and former Republicans who are either voting for Biden or have left the party outright since Trump took over in 2016.
The ex-Michigan governor is part of the illustrious company of former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and others who have long said that Trump has betrayed the eternal principles of the party, which apparently require Republicans to vote for Democrats. Snyder wrote a column explaining his decision in which he wrote that Trump is a bully and that Biden would “bring back civility.”
While Snyder is sure to earn applause in the mainstream media echo chamber for his “brave” decision, the president was quick to jump in with a cutting remark, as the New York Post noted.
“Failed RINO former Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan was a disaster with respect to the Flint Water CATASTROPHE, and a very bad Governor overall. He hurt so many people with his gross incompetence,” Trump tweeted, according to the Post. “He reminds me of Sleepy Joe!”
Michigan, which Trump won in 2016, is a critical battleground state in the incumbent president’s contest with Biden.
