Trump’s former education secretary wants the department shut down

Former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said that the Department of Education (DOE) should be shut down.

DeVos made the remarks during a “Moms for Liberty” summit on Saturday in Tampa, Florida.

The comments

“I personally think the Department of Education should not exist,” DeVos told the audience.

DeVos previously served in leading the department for four years under former President Donald Trump.

The contrast

According to the Florida Phoenix, DeVos instead advocated for ” leaving education decisions to state and local boards.”

Instead, she also advocated for school choice, school vouchers, and education freedom.

“It’s wonderful that the Administration wants to advance school choice but a nationwide federal tax-credit scholarship program is the wrong way to do it,” said Lindsey Burke, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Education Policy.

“This could open the door for further education regulations down the road that neutralize the advantages of private education as well as impede future tax reform efforts,” she added.

The contrast is a strong one but shows how political public education in America has become. DeVos may hold an extreme position, but it is no more extreme than some of the views advocated by the leftists increasingly in control of decisions regarding public education in America.
