Americans were shocked last month when images emerged showing thousands of migrants, apparently from Haiti, crowding under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas.
Those scenes were just one facet of a growing crisis, and they have led many to allege that President Joe Biden is incapable of securing the nation’s southern border. Now, those allegations are even coming from within his own party.
During an interview Saturday with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, former Hawaii congresswoman and one-time Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard took the president to task over how he has handled the ongoing migration crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border.
“The Biden–Harris administration has an open-door policy at the borders,” Gabbard declared, according to Fox. “The reality is that people are being let in and crossing the border every single day.”
“That’s the problem here”
Gabbard took particular issue with testimony from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last month in which he told Senate lawmakers that the situation is under control.
“The Department of Homeland Security secretary recently told Congress: ‘Our borders are secure.’ This is what he said,” Gabbard recalled Saturday.
In fact, DHS has revealed that its agents logged over 200,000 encounters with illegal migrants in August. Fox News reports that this represents a 300% increase compared to August 2020.
Gabbard complained that such “bold-faced” deception is having a corrosive effect on how people perceive their government, telling Pirro, “The faith and trust that the American people need to have in our leaders is dropping every day.”
“And that’s the problem here is we don’t have leaders who…put themselves ahead of the interests of the people,” the former lawmaker added, according to Fox.
“Actions speak louder than words”
Gabbard also pointed to how “drug cartels, these human traffickers, they are incredibly emboldened to the point where they feel that they can do this without consequence, where they feel they can continue profiting off of trafficking people across these borders that are essentially open.”
She told Fox on Saturday: “The fact is that the open-door policy that this administration has in place is posing a humanitarian crisis is creating a humanitarian crisis, as well as a very serious security threat for our country.”
The former congresswoman also dismissed rhetoric from Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging migrants not to come. “Actions speak louder and louder than words,” Gabbard said.
