Twitter announces midterm election ‘plan’ to safeguard communications

Social media giant Twitter says it has a plan to protect the midterm elections from misinformation, setting off alarm regarding the implications for conservatives.

The effort follows a controversial 2020 election cycle that blocked and removed content that was considered misinformation for American voters.

Twitter’s plan

“The Civic Integrity Policy covers the most common types of harmful misleading information about elections and civic events, such as: claims about how to participate in a civic process like how to vote, misleading content intended to intimidate or dissuade people from participating in the election, and misleading claims intended to undermine public confidence in an election – including false information about the outcome of the election,” it’s updated policy noted.

“Tweets with this content may be labeled with links to credible information or helpful context, and Twitter will not recommend or amplify this content in areas of the product where Twitter makes recommendations. People on Twitter will see a prompt prior to liking or sharing labeled tweets, and in cases where there is potential for harm associated with the false or misleading claim, the Tweet may not be liked or shared to prevent the spread of the misleading information,” it added.

Not again

The irony is that Twitter is now warning Americans that it will censor or limit the content that it doesn’t agree with regarding the next election.

The company is no longer hiding its plan, but is making its approach more “transparent” ahead of the purge.

Americans had hoped a planned purchase by Tesla CEO Elon Musk would lead to more freedom and less censorship on Twitter.

Musk’s deal has run into problems with Twitter, with its current leaders continuing to control the decisions related to censorship of content.

The move is certain to lead to more controversy related to the midterm elections as Americans see to let their voice be heard through their vote.
