Twitter censors all Epoch Times content without giving reason

Twitter is now censoring all content from The Epoch Times, a conservative-leaning publication founded by Chinese-Americans to be an alternative to Chinese state-run media.

Beginning July 28, all content from The Epoch Times on Twitter now has a warning that reads, “Warning: this link may be unsafe.”

“The link you are trying to access has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially spammy or unsafe,” the warning stated.

Seeking review

The Epoch Times’ Twitter page posted that it was seeking a review from Twitter about the warning.

Users can still proceed to The Epoch Times webpage if they click on the word “continue” at the bottom of the page.

According to the warning, the content could be considered as falling under one of four categories:  “malicious links that could steal personal information or harm electronic devices”; “spammy links that mislead people or disrupt their experience”; “violent or misleading content that could lead to real-world harm”; or content that “if posted directly on Twitter, are a violation of the Twitter Rules.”

Lawmakers questioning

Several lawmakers including Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Rick Scott (R-FL) have questioned the platform’s censorship of the site.

“Twitter is blocking all links to @EpochTimes, including a story about a human trafficking survivor, and labeling them as ‘spammy’ and ‘unsafe.’ Twitter must explain itself for this outrageous act of censorship,” Rubio wrote in a July 29 tweet.

Johnson said Twitter’s action was “alarming.”

One of the articles being censored by Twitter is an interview with Eliza Bleu, a human trafficking survivor. Bleu said she was “disheartened” by the censorship and that her interview was “educational” and “factual.”

“I was just really just trying to educate, raise awareness, and bring attention to the issue,” she said.
