Two Republicans join with Democrats to pass gun ban

Fox News reported that on Friday, two Republicans joined House Democrats in voting to pass a wide-ranging new gun ban.

According to the outlet, Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R) and New York Rep. Chris Jacobs (R) supported the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022. On the other hand, five Democrats voted with Republicans to oppose the measure.

What does it do?

The legislation makes it a crime to “knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).”

President Joe Biden welcomed the House vote, saying that his party is working “to keep weapons of war off our streets, save lives in this country, and reduce crime in our communities.”

For her part, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was quoted as saying, “Our nation has watched in unspeakable horror as assault weapons have been used in massacre after massacre in communities across the country.

“And disturbingly, so many of these mass shootings have targeted our precious children.  In their schools, at the movies, at the malls and throughout our communities,” the San Francisco Democrat went on to add.

“That is why I rise today in strong support in reinstating the assault weapons ban, a long-overdue step to get deadly weapons off our streets.”

However, Fox News noted that the bill appears doomed in the Senate as 60 votes are needed to overcome that chamber’s filibuster.

Virtually no benefits

What’s more, although Democrats have touted the supposed benefits of a renewed gun ban, evidence that it will actually save lives is scant.

An earlier assault weapons ban was in effect from 1994 to 2004, and that law was the focus of a Department of Justice study published the year it expired.

The research concluded that “the ban’s impact on gun violence is likely to be small at best, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.”

Meanwhile, pro-gun advocates maintain that such a ban would embolden criminals since semi-automatic weapons can make it possible for a lone victim to fend off multiple attackers.
