As the migrant crisis at the southern border continues to overwhelm state and local authorities, Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX) has thrown his support behind drastic measures being taken to stem the tide of illegal arrivals while also blasting President Joe Biden for having “surrendered control” of the situation, as Fox News reports.
Arrington’s declarations come amid a series of actions taken by state and county authorities in his state in reaction to what some localities have deemed an “invasion” that demands the use of extraordinary law enforcement powers.
Border crisis spurs action
As the New York Post notes, numerous Texas counties last week declared a border “invasion” as a way to put additional pressure on the state government to take action to address the crisis and to draw heightened attention to the strain unchecked migration is placing on local communities.
In the words of Kinney County Judge Tully Shahan, “We’re being invaded. The facts are there. This is real. We want America to know this is real. America doesn’t know what’s happening here.”
Officials from Texas counties including Kinney, Goliad, Terrell, and Uvalde joined forces to blast the Biden administration for its “open border policy” and relayed stories of the ways in which their communities have been harmed by an influx of migrants and the human and drug smuggling that results from their unfettered movement.
Soon after, Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order authorizing the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to apprehend illegals and return them to ports of entry, as a means to counter historic levels of unlawful crossings since Biden took office.
“While President Biden refuses to do his job and enforce the immigration laws enacted by Congress, the State of Texas is once again stepping up and taking unprecedented action to protect Americans and secure our southern border,” stated Abbott. “The cartels have become emboldened and enriched by President Biden’s open border policies, smuggling in record numbers of people, weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl.”
Arrington praises moves
Having introduced a resolution in 2021 deeming the border crisis an “invasion,” Arrington this week voiced support for the steps being taken by state and local authorities in Texas.
“You have a federal government under the leadership of a derelict president who has surrendered control of the border to paramilitary narco-terrorist drug cartels. And these cartels are very organized, very sophisticated and military capable.”
Noting the disparity in how the migrant crisis is viewed in comparison to other potential types of encroachments on sovereignty and security, Arrington added, “If you had Al Qaeda or ISIS or some terrorist group that had control of our border and was pushing this poison into our communities and killing our families and our children and our citizens, I guarantee you that people would see this differently.”
Putting the situation on the ground in stark terms, Arrington added, “But it is an invasion, and it is an onslaught, and we are under seize. And there is no other choice for a state leader, a governor, in good conscience, then to declare it as such and begin to enforce the laws of the land and secure the border and protect their citizens. And that’s what I believe is happening with our current governor.”
The Biden administration’s abject disregard for the rule of law and its dogged determination to permit an almost unlimited flow of illegals to come into the country has already done untold damage to impacted border communities, and it is more critical than ever for voters to effect change at the ballot box so that the trend can be reversed as rapidly as possible.
