New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) admitted on Monday that he was no longer concerned about a dire shortage of ventilators for hospitalized coronavirus patients.
During his daily coronavirus press briefing on Monday, Cuomo told the press, “We don’t need any additional ventilators right now.”
“There is no hospital that needs ventilators that doesn’t have ventilators, there is no hospital that needs PPE (personal protective equipment) that doesn’t have it in the state system,” he added.
The admission is an about-face from his panicky demands over the past two weeks about an impending shortage of ventilators.
Ventilators pour in
One potential reason for Cuomo’s apparent change of opinion is that the rate of new COVID-19 cases in New York may be slowing down.
And more life-saving ventilators are arriving. Cuomo said last week that he would utilize the National Guard to seize ventilators and other needed supplies from hospitals in less impacted parts of the state.
Cuomo also said Saturday that New York is receiving a donation of 1,000 ventilators, thanks to billionaires Joe and Clara Tsai and Jack Ma, along with the Chinese government. The donation comes in addition to thousands of ventilators that were obtained via the federal government.
Hundreds more ventilators and other critical supplies are being shared by California, Oregon, and Washington. The west coast states so far are seeing more success with “flattening the curve,” reducing the risk of a surge of patients who would require ventilator assistance.
Cuomo’s admission also seems to have proven President Trump’s skepticism correct. According to Politico, it was in late March when Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity, “I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be.”
Of Cuomo’s demands about the number of ventilators needed in New York, Trump had added, “I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. You go into major hospitals sometimes, and they’ll have two ventilators. And now, all of a sudden, they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’”
During his daily coronavirus briefing on Friday, Trump said, “We happen to think that [Cuomo is] well-served with ventilators. We’re going to find out.”
It appears that we have found out, and in Cuomo’s own words on Monday, he is indeed “well-served” with ventilators at this time.
