Virginia Democrats pass bill requiring background checks for all gun sales

The Democrat-controlled Virginia state legislature passed over the weekend a new measure that further restricts Virginians’ Second Amendment rights.

Both the state House and Senate have approved a bill requiring background checks for all gun sales, The Hill reported Saturday. The legislation is now headed to Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam’s desk, where it is expected to pass.

New restrictions

The bill passed the Virginia state House on Thursday 51–45. It went on to pass the Senate 23–16 on Saturday.

The Washington Post reports that the General Assembly also moved Saturday to restrict “handgun purchases to one per month,” except for those who possess a concealed carry permit.

The bills represented “the last of seven gun-control measures advocated by Northam that passed the legislature after years of such bills being quashed by Republican majorities,” the Post added.

An eighth measure banning assault weapons in the state didn’t make it through the Senate.

Of course, the seven measures didn’t pass without backlash. The Post reported:

Thousands of gun rights advocates from around the country protested in Richmond in January, some making threats that drew a massive police response. Democrats banned guns in the Capitol, and residents of rural areas complained that their way of life was under attack.

A fool’s celebration

The legislation was pushed through after Democrats won total control of the state’s government in last November’s elections, with Dems winning the majority in the House and Senate and holding the governor’s mansion, according to The Hill. This is the first time Dems have had total control of the state since 1994, The Hill noted.

This made it easy for those on the left to make radical changes to Virginia’s gun laws — and on Saturday, they rejoiced.

“We promised to make Virginia safer from the senseless gun violence that has ravaged our communities,” Virginia State House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn (D) said in a tweet Saturday, according to the Washington Examiner. “Promise kept.”

One thing these Democrats seem to have forgotten, however, is that only the good guys follow their laws; the bad guys don’t. In the end, this means that criminals will get their hands on guns and other weapons and do bad things with them — just as they always have — while the upstanding citizens, stuck following the law, will be left defenseless.

This is something that only a fool would celebrate.
