Virginia Dems want to end bill that would require parental notification of sexually explicit material in schools

Virginia Democrats are pushing to end a bill that would keep parents from being notified of sexually explicit material being used in public school classrooms.

The state bill proposed under newly seated Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin would allow for parental involvement prior to usage of materials that could be considered sexually explicit.

The bill seeks to counter a growing concern of explicit material in school libraries, yet state Democrats continue to push against it.

A Brick Firewall

Virginia Senate President Louise Lucas (D) said, “when it comes to what’s in the curriculum, that should be left to the school boards and to the boards of education. And if a parent wants to opt out, I think they should have the right to do that.”

Fellow state Democrat Louise Lucas added, “Don’t forget the 20 other @VASenateDems who are part of our brick firewall! I’m just the fun one.”

Concerning Reading Material

“Two books that were removed from Fairfax County Public Schools libraries after a parent objected to sexual content will go back into circulation. The Northern Virginia school district cited a ‘commitment to supporting diversity in literature,’” NBC Washington reported in November.

The two books included graphic novel “Gender Queer,” by Maia Kobabe, and the novel “Lawn Boy,” by Jonathan Evison.

Lawn Boy “contains graphic descriptions of sex between men and children.”

“The decision reaffirms FCPS’s ongoing commitment to provide diverse reading materials that reflect our student population, allowing every child an opportunity to see themselves reflected in literary characters,” school officials said.

“Both reviews concluded that the books were valuable in their potential to reach marginalized youth who may struggle to find relatable literary characters that reflect their personal journeys.”

The concerning books and the actions by Democrats to keep them in school libraries and allow parents to not be informed does not show the left as the party that cares about American families or children.
