Watchdog group warns Pelosi’s Jan. 6 committee is an anti-Trump witch hunt

As the anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol incident approaches, many Americans have been appalled by the Democratic Party’s Soviet-style crackdown in response to the riot.

Conservative activist Tom Fitton, of watchdog group Judicial Watch, warned that Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) Jan. 6 committee is pursuing a witch hunt against President Trump and his base.

“Brutish in its attack”

While Democrats have cheered the committee’s authoritarian efforts, many have condemned it as a thinly veiled partisan show trial with the aim of painting Trump, his supporters, and conservatives more generally as dangerous “insurrectionists.”

The committee has been quick to threaten criminal charges against those daring to refuse its demands for information, including the private cell phone records of American citizens who have not been accused of any crimes.

Pelosi’s team has targeted as many as 100 people for peacefully expressing grievances with the 2020 election at a Trump rally on the day of the riot and even months beforehand, Fitton said.

Meanwhile, Biden’s political Justice Department has targeted Biden’s enemies without hesitation. Steve Bannon has already been charged with contempt at the Jan. 6 committee’s request, and Mark Meadows could soon follow, Fitton noted.

“We have a Congress that is completely out of control. Brutish in its attack on the rule of law, the Constitution, and the civil liberties of innocent American citizens,” Fitton said.

Targeting political enemies

Pelosi did not exactly hide her intentions when she, as CBS News noted, described Republicans as the “enemy within” after the riot, only to block Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) from serving on the committee.

The only Republicans on the committee, Reps. Adam Kinzinger (IL), and Liz Cheney (WY), are both vehemently anti-Trump.

While Democrats have sought to conceal their partisan motives with a great deal of solemn pageantry, they are not interested in a real investigation of the riot, Fitton said. He suggested that Pelosi and Capitol police allowed rioters into the Capitol to create a pretext for targeting political dissent.

“If you have a question about the election, you should be subject to investigation,” he said, describing the Democratic Party’s agenda. “That’s Third World, but unfortunately, it’s America right now.”

Pelosi is planning a “solemn” anniversary on Jan. 6 to recapitulate the party’s “insurrection” propaganda. For his part, Trump will hold a press conference to expose what he calls the real insurrection: the 2020 election, according to WGN.
