Kanye West files to appear on New Jersey, Missouri ballots

Democrat nominee Joe Biden is currently comfortably leading Donald Trump in the polls, but rapper Kanye West is threatening to steal voters from Biden in the November election.

West has reportedly gathered enough signatures to file to appear on the ballot in New Jersey and Missouri, the Daily Caller reported on Tuesday.

Disrupting the campaign

West’s announcement of his intention to run for president in the 2020 election cycle was largely dismissed by Democrats as a PR move.

However, West has made definitive moves to become a viable challenger within the last several weeks. The New York Daily News wrote on Tuesday that “Kanye West filed petitions to be on the ballot as an independent presidential candidate in New Jersey. Currently, he’s on the ballot in Oklahoma, filed in Missouri, and has until Thursday to file for New York.”

West also has reportedly gathered enough signatures to appear on the Illinois ballot, as of last week.

West is unlikely to gain any real traction in the 2020 race but has the potential to take votes away from Joe Biden, who is seen as the default option for those wishing to vote against Trump.

British consulting firm Redfield and Wilton Strategies found in a poll conducted in mid-July that West scored 2 percent of voters.

However, West has doubled-down on his campaign since then, holding his first rally on July 19 and filing paperwork to appear on several states’ ballot soon after.

Voter confusion

West has not yet made it clear what his platform issues are and where he stands on Donald Trump. West previously endorsed and campaigned for Donald Trump in the 2016 election cycle, but appears to have distanced himself from Trump in recent months.

West has primarily attacked Joe Biden, tweeting earlier this week that “I will beat Biden off of write ins #2020VISION,” followed by another tweet: “I CAN BEAT BIDEN OFF OF WRITE INS.”

West further confused voters by hinting that he could postpone his campaign to the 2024 election cycle. “#2020VISION or maybe ’24,” West tweeted. “I guess all black people supposed to vote on Biden? Y’all want me to run or nah???”

Democrats assuming that black Americans will vote for Joe Biden out of spite for Donald Trump have attempted to dismiss West’s candidacy as unserious and invalid, but if West sticks with the campaign, Biden’s strategists may have to actually have a real problem on their hands.
