West Hollywood votes to ‘defund the police’

What’s the solution to more crime? Less police . . . obviously.

At least this is the solution chosen by West Hollywood, California, which has voted, according to Fox News, to literally “defund the police.”

The proposal

On Monday evening, West Hollywood, a city dominated by so-called progressives, held a vote on the city’s budget.

As part of this vote, there was a proposal to reduce the number of armed sheriff’s deputies by four. In other words, it would cut the police budget such that four sheriff’s deputies would have to be let go. But, it doesn’t stop there.

The proposal would replace these four sheriff’s deputies with 30 unarmed “ambassadors” from Block by Block. “What’s an ‘ambassador?'” you may ask. According to Fox, the Ambassador Program “staffs unarmed security ambassadors who provide the city with supplemental law enforcement services.”

So, to sum up, the proposal would take the funds that would normally go to the armed sheriff’s deputies and give the funds to 30 “unarmed ambassadors.”

Oh yeah, and it would do so at a time when West Hollywood is seeing a surge in crime. Just in March, for example, reports indicated that the city saw a 137% year-over-year increase in the crime rate.

Sounds like a good idea . . .

Considering that it is West Hollywood that we are talking about here, it will come as no surprise that the city council voted in favor of the proposal. Perhaps the only surprising part is that the proposal almost didn’t pass – the final vote was 3-2.

West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister was among the dissenters. Meister said that “most of the residents and businesses” that she heard from were against the idea.

Whatever the case may be, West Hollywood is now going to be down four sheriff’s deputies.

This, of course, is all right out of the left’s “Defund the Police” playbook. Many of the wiser Democrats, or at least the ones who are looking to stay in power, have given up on this idea or, at least, have moved it to the backburner. Not West Hollywood.

We’ll have to see how this works out for the city, particularly given the crime surge that it has already been witnessing. Common sense would suggest that it isn’t going to work out at all.
